MONTHLY THEME:
OPENING FORBIDDEN DOORS
LESSON TOPIC: REFUSING
TO GIVE GOD'S GLORY TO A MAN
JANUARY SECOND WEEK
January 10, 2012
LESSON TEXT:
GENESIS 14:17-24; I KINGS 13:8
MEMORY VERSE: "That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will
not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abramrich..." Genesis 14:23
It seems that Abram's response to Melchizedek is abrupt and rude. The king of Salem came out to meet
Abram following his victory over Chedorlaomer and to celebrate his victory. Melchizedek was also a priest who served
the Lord. Abram must have known this because he gave tithe of all he had taken from the defeated confederation of kings
to Melchizedek. whether it was a text of his faithfulness or a generous gift in recognition of Abram's hard-fought battle,
Melchizedek offered to give back the goods to Abram and keep the persons captured instead. Abram vowed that he would
not prosper himself by any way that did not give God recognition and glory. Abram had given the tithe and he refused
to take it back.
Tithing is God's system of blessing believers. The rewards are certain
though we sometimes have to wait for their manifestation. Abram wasn't rude, but he was giving God the glory and honor
due His name. Abram recognized that his blessings came from god and he wasn't about to open the door for a mortal man
to claim what belonged to God.
QUESTIONS:
1. Who is Melchizedek? What do we know about him?
2. Why did Abram offer the tithe to Melchizedek? Do we know where and how Abram learned about tithing?
3. What temptation was offered to Abram? Why did Abram refuse?

Discuss the following teaching points you can share with others: - This lesson teaches us something very
important about Abram's character and helps us understand why god chose to bless him.
- The tithe
belongs to God. Stealing it will not enrich us in any way.
- We must be careful not to allow
anyone to take credit for what God has done in our lives.
